Home landscaping design can add great amount of value to your garden. However in order to make your efforts successful it is necessary to first plan your entire effort into a scheduled plan so that you get most out of your efforts.

Most people start out with excitement for a great home landscape idea but without much knowledge of executing them in the backyard or front yard their efforts may go into vain.

That’s why here is a simple 3-step plan that works for every type of home garden very easily and with least efforts.

Step 1) Write down what you intend to have in the finished garden on a piece of paper. This step is absolutely important and many guys mess it up or completely eliminate from the process.

Once you know what you want in the home garden it becomes a simple task of getting it together in the assigned budget. Gardening is a simple process of planning and executing within the limitations of budget and the physical boundaries of the backyard.

Step 2) Create simple sketches using pencil and paper or a landscaping design software (if you can). Try various alternatives of the design. Garden planning works best when you let your imagination go wild.

Use the list of items you created in the first step to place them in your backyard or front yard. You can go in for a grid floor plan or a random or informal layout with circular pathways to move around in the garden. There are absolutely infinite options available here. Get out in the backyard and start to visualize the finishes and completely planned garden already in place.

Step 3) With the finished garden sketches you can start to actually mark boundaries of various spaces on the site and have a landscaping contractor do the execution work for you.

Here is a great home landscaping design tip that will add extra beauty to your garden with little to no extra cost to spend. When you locate various spaces in your home garden see to it that they are visible from the interior rooms.

For example if you have planned a children play area such as a sand pit, you can locate it at a place, which is visible when you are sitting in the living room, so that you can keep an eye on kids and their activities.

Home Improvement New Year’s Resolutions http://www.sweethomes.biz/home-improvement-new-years-resolutions/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=home-improvement-new-years-resolutions http://www.sweethomes.biz/home-improvement-new-years-resolutions/#comments Sun, 05 Feb 2012 21:00:26 +0000 maureen http://www.sweethomes.biz/home-improvement-new-years-resolutions/ home improvement23 Home Improvement New Years Resolutions

Every New Year we all make a number of resolutions to improve ourselves. These include the standard “lose weight, get a better job, be a better parent,” character-changing resolutions. Although they often can be life changing, they also very often are left incomplete. This year, why not be a little more pragmatic and make some New Year’s resolutions to better our homes?

Our homes are the places that we spend most our time in; in the end making some big changes within the house could actually lead to some personal life-style alterations. So, without further adieu, here is a list of potential New Year’s home improvement resolutions for you to make:

Make Your Home Eco-Friendly: It’s not just about jumping on the environmental ‘green-craze.’ Making your home more eco-friendly not only helps the environment around us but also can save you a bundle of money. There are a number of ways, small and big, to retro-fit your home to be green. A small and easy change is switching all your standard light bulbs out for longer lasting compact fluorescent or LED bulbs. These bulbs are environmentally friendly and also can save a homeowner around $50 per bulb throughout their lifetime. Another small change that can make big difference is installing a few low cost solar panels for outdoor lighting.

For those with homes in cold weather climates, a big eco-friendly change might involve retrofitting your house for better insulation, which will save you a ton in energy and heating bills in the long run. For those in warmer climates that are constantly maintaining and watering their lawn: an artificial lawn can look just as good but save water and maintenance bills.

Designate an Exercise Room: We all have a room in our house for relaxation – a couch potato heaven that has the big screen TV, plush arm chair, and table to kick your feet up on. That’s all swell, but what about when you need to get some physical activitiy? It’s often difficult to build up the motivation to keep up with a gym membership – we’re always making excuses like ‘the gym is too far,’ and ‘I’m too tired before or after work.’

It’s time to throw out those excuses and designate one room in your house as an ‘exercise room.’ It could be a simple modification to another room by adding just one machines like a treadmill, Stairmaster, or Bowflex. Or maybe it could be an entire retrofit of a room by adding mats for aerobics or yoga as well as a set of weights for strength training. Either way, simply calling a room in your home ‘an exercise room’ can often be enough motivation to get you off the couch and into a physical workout.

Get Rid of Your Junk, Finally: We also all have rooms in our homes that are filled with useless clutter and junk. For many of us this room is the basement or garage, which serves as the graveyards for old boxes of toys, broken down appliances and torn up pieces of furniture. Not only does this junk take up unnecessary room within your home that could be put to better use, but it also takes up room in your head – leading to elevated stress that could be avoided with a thorough hauling project.

We all tell ourselves every year that we’ll have the time to get rid of that junk, slowly but surely, but it never happens. It’s as simple as being truthful with yourself and your family as far as what is necessary and what is junk. When you’ve figured out what’s junk – simply call up a local junk removal service to come in and get rid of it in a fast and efficient manner.

Bedroom Decorating Ideas – Using Natural Light In Decorating http://www.sweethomes.biz/bedroom-decorating-ideas-using-natural-light-in-decorating/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=bedroom-decorating-ideas-using-natural-light-in-decorating http://www.sweethomes.biz/bedroom-decorating-ideas-using-natural-light-in-decorating/#comments Sun, 05 Feb 2012 12:55:53 +0000 maureen http://www.sweethomes.biz/bedroom-decorating-ideas-using-natural-light-in-decorating/ bedroom interior55 Bedroom Decorating Ideas Using Natural Light In Decorating

Depending upon the geographical location of your home building and the face towards which the external wall of your bedroom is, you will receive either plenty or a minimum of natural sunlight into your bedroom. It is naturally assumed that natural sunlight penetrates inside an interior space for about 7 meters (20 feet approx.)

The natural sunlight if harsh and strong will also bring hat with it. To cater with these the proper ventilating outlets above the windows and door openings are normally provided to make a path to escape the hot air, which becomes light in weight and rises above.

However blocking it and crating shadows on plain walls to add extra interest in a bedroom can do creative use of this penetrating light. One of the best things about natural light is because it comes from Sun, it’s position, and angle and intensity will change overtime. The quality of sunlight will always be different at morning, afternoons and evening creating more interesting patterns.

There are many easy ways to “obstruct” the path of natural sunlight that enters in a bedroom. The easiest is to use a curtain with two layers. The first layer is of natural cloth and the second outside layer is a transparent layer that allows the light to enter by filtering it. If this thin cloth is used with intricate embroidery it will caste some great shadows on the plain wall inside, creating patterns.

Another way to obstruct natural sunlight is to use mild steel or wrought iron grill will detailed mesh around the borders. Grill has another purpose of protecting interiors from outside.

One more easy way of obstructing light is to use a stained glass on a window. However using a stained glass on a big window can obstruct light in much more quantity causing darkness inside the room, which we don’t want to happen. That’s why it is a good idea to use a stained glass on slit window. (Vertical window with narrow opening) It can be a non-openable fixed type of window that can create colored light pattern inside the bedroom.

If the bedroom is on the top floor of the house, a great way to add some awesome lighting effect is to use a “domical skylight” with fiber or glass panels. But this can be an expensive approach and must be thought during the design stage itself.

These were just a few thoughts on using natural light in bedroom decorating. I hope this article was informative to you.

How can my bedroom be attractively lit? This is a very frequently asked and recurring question put to me as an interior designer. You can create different atmospheres using light. Attention to lighting is actually a trend in itself. Designing a good lighting plan is certainly not a luxury. Good lighting in the right place makes your interior more appealing to the eyes. Due to the multi functionality of the room it needs all kinds of light. It needs the very basic functional light but also a very sexy romantic lantern-light.

The Lighting Plan

To arrive at a good lighting plan for a particular space it is important to think carefully about the functionality of the space. What is the room used for? Is it used for sleeping, relaxing, working, watching television or reading? What type of atmosphere must radiate in the bedroom? Who will use this space? Where do you want to do what? What light do you need? Remember that someone over 65 years of age requires 3.5 times as much light to read as someone younger.

Moonlight Sound Lights

What is more festive than romantic moonlight in your bedroom? To create this you can use Moonlight Sound lights! These are a special combination of lights, visible from 360° around.

You can choose the standard white surface or the Moonlight and solid-colored versions. An extra magical effect is achieved by applying the colour filters in one of the 24 standard colors. The best part is that they are available with a wireless option. The battery lights will be actually everywhere.

Ceiling
To make your ceiling special, you can create a starry sky. There are panels for sale in which a large number of LED lights are installed. These lights twinkle soft so your ceiling appears to be a starry sky.

Walls
Paint the walls your favorite color with a pattern roller. This is a paint roller with a template on top so you get special effects. There are several patterns available, all of which you can adjust to your taste.

Smell
Romantic scents can easily give a personalized theme to any bedroom. Scented candles or oil burners distribute soft little bursts of calming or sensual scents in to the room. Do you like floral scents? Place sachets of lavender or rosemary in your closet between your sheets.

Growing Culinary Sage For Cooking and Dry Kitchen Herb Gardens (Salvia Officinalis) http://www.sweethomes.biz/growing-culinary-sage-for-cooking-and-dry-kitchen-herb-gardens-salvia-officinalis/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=growing-culinary-sage-for-cooking-and-dry-kitchen-herb-gardens-salvia-officinalis http://www.sweethomes.biz/growing-culinary-sage-for-cooking-and-dry-kitchen-herb-gardens-salvia-officinalis/#comments Sat, 04 Feb 2012 22:24:39 +0000 maureen http://www.sweethomes.biz/growing-culinary-sage-for-cooking-and-dry-kitchen-herb-gardens-salvia-officinalis/ kitchen garden58 Growing Culinary Sage For Cooking and Dry Kitchen Herb Gardens (Salvia Officinalis)

The sage herbs you cook with in the kitchen also a makes a delicious addition to dry gardens. Culinary Sage or salvia officinalis is native to the warm Mediterranean regions. They grow to a height of three feet tall and almost as wide. The stems are square and woody, usually covers with short hairs. All parts of this grayish green plant are aromatic. Salvia leaves are long and thin, up to 4 inches long and 1/2 inch across. They are crinkly, fragrant and sticky and can be used in cooking either fresh or dried. Sage grows in full sun to partial, dappled shade, and are hardy to about 20 degrees.

Sage plants flower in the summer with upright usually with blue or light blue flowers. They are beautiful in arrangements, or dried for kitchen decoration. Salvia can tolerate regular garden watering, but will also do well in drought conditions. After a few years they will need to be cut back to remove dead branches and maintain shape.

Sage can be grown in containers. The recommended size is at least an 8 inch pot, or larger. The smaller the pot, the faster plants can dry out, so it is advisable to water every week as long as the soil doesn’t become soggy.

Sage has a strong, earthy aroma. It adds flavor and depth to stews and soups. It mixes well with beef or chicken and makes green beans seem a little bit heartier. Pineapple sage is a close relative and adds a lighter flavor to food. It goes well with chicken. Fresh sage is great stuffed into chicken or turkey roasts and you can use the whole branch. Put an orange in there for a great flavor combo. The best time to pick sage for drying is just before it flowers, but any time of year will work. To dry the herbs, tie them in a bunch and hang them upside down in a cool dry place to snip as needed.

Before modern medicine sage tea was gargled for sore throats and cold tea was drunk to stop sweating. Crushed fresh leaves were used on insect bites. The Romans used sage in religious rites and Native Americans recognize White Sage for blessing and cleansing.

Start a little kitchen garden either outdoors or on your windowsill. Good companion herb plants for sage are rosemary and thyme as they have similar water and sun requirements. Visit http://www.theGardenPages.com to see photos of blue flowering sage and read more about dry garden plants and herbs. Happy gardening!

Ever since I was a little lad I loved working with the soil and growing things. I grew up in a small town just outside Kansas City. We had several acres so there was plenty of room to garden. I can remember when I was in my teens my father planted a garden that just exploded. It seriously feed the whole neighborhood and we still had vegetables and tomatoes we couldn’t use and had to constantly try to find people to give the food away to. Tomato plants that were taller than me, zucchini squash by the hundreds. We loved to work in the garden together as a family. It was always great quality time.

I learned to love vegetables back then. I hated the winter time because I couldn’t just go out to the garden and pick what I wanted to eat. In the winter we had to buy all those fresh vegetables at the grocery store and that was expensive. (Local farmers markets weren’t around yet, or at least I didn’t know where to find them?)

So now you have a brief history of my gardening with family. When I grew up and got married this was something I wanted to make sure my kids learned also. Everywhere we lived we planted gardens. I planted fruit trees and our yard was planted with different varieties of tomatoes all over the place. Our landscape was always something you could eat. I went on to raise 4 children and we always had a garden growing. It was so nice to just go out and pick what we wanted.

It wasn’t until I was working as a Chef that I discovered culinary herbs. I learned just how much difference there was in fresh culinary herbs compared to the dried stuff (I call it stuff because sometimes I swear it was just some weeds someone dried out and called a culinary herb.) The flavor difference is like comparing hamburger to beef filet mignon.

I also remember how anxious I was when planning my culinary herb garden. Could I actually grow culinary herbs that tasted like the ones I would buy for the hotel or restaurants I worked as Chef at? I got my kids involved. We started some seed in egg cartons we saved. The kids had so much fun watching the little plants sprout up from the egg cartons. They would watch with anticipation of the “actual planting”. Then we would cut the egg cartons up and slice an X in the bottom of them for the roots to grow out of.

The boys would till the ground and turn up the compost. “They didn’t always like that job so much. LOL. But, when the “egg pots” (what I called them) were ready to go the kids would plant them in the areas I planned out. As they grew they became absolutely gorgeous landscape. It was wonderful to go out and pick off a piece of the plant and rub in between my fingers and smell the aroma they emitted. I could smell just how they were going to add just the right touch to dishes I would prepare with them.

Because my kids grew up with culinary herb gardens they all learned the importance of growing what you can and utilizing local markets when you couldn’t grow your own. They all loved being in the kitchen cooking with the stuff we got out of the garden. They all have become good cooks. The time together in the garden and in the kitchen because part of our heritage. I would like to challenge you to make it part of your heritage as well. If you don’t have property where you can plant your own garden, most communities have community gardens now. Check online and see if one is close to you and what you need to do to become part of it. Or another option is to get some pots and grow kits from your local big box hardware store and grow indoors or on the deck or porch. You don’t have to own acres to grow culinary herbs and a few vegetables.

My kids are all raised and away now. I really miss the time we had together in the garden. But, I still get phone calls asking what do I do with this herb or that herb. Or how do I make this or that. My family all know my passion for food and many of them share that same passion. I am really grateful for that. We have a get together at my parent’s house almost every Sunday. We plan a theme and everyone brings something they have made. It is always a feast of new and unusual foods.

Have you heard of Bountiful Baskets? It is something my sister introduced me to. They are a local community program when you can buy into shares of community crops. They distribute the goodies weekly. You should do a check online to see if anyone in your area has set up a site yet. You will get things you have never heard of, and then you can ask me what do I do with this?

I hope you have enjoyed the article. I look forward to your questions on new things you find at your local market and gardening questions related to food.

Organic Gardening – Growing Pumpkins in the Home Garden http://www.sweethomes.biz/organic-gardening-growing-pumpkins-in-the-home-garden/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=organic-gardening-growing-pumpkins-in-the-home-garden http://www.sweethomes.biz/organic-gardening-growing-pumpkins-in-the-home-garden/#comments Sat, 04 Feb 2012 01:46:47 +0000 maureen http://www.sweethomes.biz/organic-gardening-growing-pumpkins-in-the-home-garden/ home garden53 Organic Gardening Growing Pumpkins in the Home Garden

Pumpkins produce a large orange fruit that is commonly grown for pies, Halloween decor and competitions. It is a crop that is entered in almost all country fair contests. Gardeners that grow this crop for competitions take a lot of pride in the techniques they use.

There are a large variety of pumpkins that you can choose from and for specific needs. These varieties range from the small tasty pumpkin used for baking pies to the heavyweights that are grown for competition in your local country fair. No matter what your choice is, pumpkins are a crop that can be easily grown in the home garden.

Pumpkins like a soil with a ph level of between 6.5 and 6.8, a soil with plenty of composted manure and a good healthy soil structure that will retain moisture well as well as drain well.

You can sow seeds directly into the garden once all dangers of frost are over in your area, or start seedlings indoors in peat pots about 4 weeks before the last expected frost. If you choose to grow your own transplants, you can plant them in the garden once the first true leaves appear and protect the seedlings by building a mini greenhouse over them. This can be simply done by placing a large jar over the plant, building a wooden frame and covering it with clear plastic or taking 2 old windows and fastening them together in the shape of a teepee. This will shield the plant from the dangers of frost and wind damage, along with giving them that extra length to the growing season when wanting the trophy at the next fair.

Another method that can be used to boost your crop along is once the first female flower appears, about 10 weeks from when the seedling emerges, you can hand pollinate the flowers. The female flower can easily be distinguished by the small pumpkin at it’s base. Early morning is the best time to do this. Find a freshly opened male flower, pick and remove the outer petals and gently swab the stigma of the female flower with the stamen of the male. This is a big advantage in extending the growing season needed to produce large pumpkins.

When growing large pumpkins, the stem location is very important. You want the stem to grow perpendicular to the vine. Coach the pumpkin slowly over the period of a weeks time to the right position if needed. Be careful, at early stages a pumpkin is very fragile and you can injure the stem.

Pruning the vines is another way to help increase the productivity and size of your pumpkins. Prune back any vine length that has reached beyond 12 feet past a set fruit, not 12 feet from the plant, and any side shoots off the main vine that are longer than 8 feet ad bury the cut ends to reduce any water loss.

A good healthy fertile soil with plenty of composted manure should supply your pumpkin crop with the nutrients they need. Feeding them with a compost or manure tea during the growing season will give them an extra boost that can benefit your crop, just don’t over do it.

Harvesting is done at the end of the season once the vines have withered, the stems turn brown and start to dry.

Fairy Bedroom D?cor can be fun for not only your child but also the adults as well, as you can bring your child’s dreams to life by creating a wonderful and inspiring haven for them to enjoy. Decorating with Fairies has never been easier with all of the wonderful accessories you can buy. There are lamps, wallpaper, pillows, shams, comforters, blankets and so much more. You can get traditional fairy designs that remind you of old English bedtime stories, or the more modern look of Tinkerbell.

Imagine a place that is not only fun for your little girl but also appealing and relaxing for you, a world full of magic and wonder all inside of her bedroom. A place where wishes can come true and you can reach the stars with only a thought. Picture your little girl’s bedroom going from boring or drab into a fairy land adventure, with the help of some well placed pieces of furniture.

When getting ready to start transforming her bedroom, you need to have a basic idea of what you want and how it will be placed. A good way to start is to paint the walls a solid white, or other color your little girl prefers. Depending on whether the room has hardwood flooring or carpet, you can choose a rug the same color as the wall or one with a pattern where colors are brought together.

Once you have your basics done you can then start looking for wall trimmings, such as borders, clocks, pictures and other decorative items, including shelves with fake vines decorating them. There are figurines that sit, some that hang from the wall and ceiling and even ones you can use in place of handles on dressers and doors. When decorating the walls you can put a clear coat of paint with glitter in it, giving it a magical sparkle. You can also paint plants on the wall that go up to the ceiling and then have hidden fairies throughout.

When looking for fabrics for the room you want to remember that Fairies are light magical creatures that are delicate and little, so use lightweight materials. You can take a sheer material with anything fairy on it, such as flowers or sparkles, and drape this over the curtains on the windows, and from the ceiling to about half-way down to the bed to give the bed and bedroom a hidden and special feel.

Depending on how much you want to spend you can get entire bedroom sets and furniture to match the fairy theme. If you want some control and spend less, you can buy a bed set in a soft color and then accent with pillows or throws to match. If the bed is made from wood and you do not want to change the color of it, you can get stick on accessories that can be moved around. These will give the bed a magical feel without actually painting it.

For lamps and light fixtures go with something that matches the room or that you would not mind being there for a long time, gold, silver and while light fixtures and lamps are a good choice. Once you have them you can then add gauzy shades for the lamps, and then hang sparkling gems from the light fixtures.

Incorporating a fairy design your child’s bedroom can be done for newborns to teenagers, all you have to do is use the right age-appropriate accessories. The older your child, the more she can provide input on what she would like.

Living Room Color Schemes – A Positive Approach http://www.sweethomes.biz/living-room-color-schemes-a-positive-approach/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=living-room-color-schemes-a-positive-approach http://www.sweethomes.biz/living-room-color-schemes-a-positive-approach/#comments Thu, 02 Feb 2012 05:44:28 +0000 maureen http://www.sweethomes.biz/living-room-color-schemes-a-positive-approach/ living room11 Living Room Color Schemes A Positive Approach

Take the flower wall paper down; it’s time to start really thinking about living schemes. Most people never even thinking about living room, because the colors are already chosen for them with the furniture that they like, and the home that they have purchased. Think about how many people buy furniture unstained, or uncovered, and at the same time, purchases a home that has yet to be painted on the inside. Right, not too many people do that, so we must focus on the obvious truth about living room color schemes, much of it is already chosen for us.

The best way to approach a schemes is think about what you can do, not what you can not do. This means to look at whatever you have the ability to change, and change it as much as possible to match some type of living room color scheme.

A color scheme is simply a coordinated effort amongst all the colors in the room to create a group, or scheme that is noticeable from a distance. Think about the stripes on a traditional prison uniform, the color scheme of that is easily identifiable as black, and white. Some rooms have single color schemes like brown, or red, or white. While most have multiple color schemes.

One of the most iconic schemes of all time is the hunting lodge scheme. This is a deep brown color that most of the furniture comes out to be, matched with a dark green wall paper. The brown and green is then matched with natural wood accents from handmade furniture. This color scheme works well together because the green and brown contrast one and other to a point that is pleasing to the eye.

While not all will want to go with the hunting lodge color scheme, there are plenty of other living room color schemes that one can utilize. One popular living room color scheme is that of grey on the walls, and tan on the furniture. The grey helps to keep the furniture the focal point, while the tan keeps the eyes from becoming too overwhelmed with color, this is a good example of a modest living room color scheme.

Regardless of the schemes that you choose to implement, the important thing is that you become cognizant of what living room color schemes are, and how to create one that works for you.
